Q: The concept of targeting isn’t new. Now you say things have changed. How so?

RA: Things have changed profoundly. First, Facebook has become an epicenter of daily activity for a substantial portion of the world’s population. Second, Facebook captures vast amounts of data about these visitors—as of 2012, 2.5 billion pieces of content a day. Third, Facebook enables advertisers to zero in with surgical precision on the kinds of people they most want to reach. Facebook is offering data that’s available nowhere else.

Q: What kinds of data?

RA: The kind that helps you target the most promising types of people for your business. The kind that lets you know what else they’re buying, how they’re voting, where they travel, what charities they support. That’s a huge advantage. The more precisely you understand your prospect, the better your own marketing becomes. You can focus in on them, talk specifically about the things that interest them, reflect their values.

Q: And that leads to better results.

RA: Better results at a better price. Precise targeting minimizes waste. Talking to people who can’t or won’t become customers drives business owners crazy. But until now, you had to do it. As a 19th century retailer once said: “I know half of what I spend on advertising is wasted. I just don’t know which half.”

Q: Any other advantages?

RA: Yes. In fact, the advantages pile up fast. In addition to better results for less money, you enjoy a competitive advantage. As I’ve said, very few remodelers have begun using Facebook this way. Here’s another: this strategy will go a long way toward smoothing the peaks and valleys in a remodeler’s sales year. Who says December and January have to be lousy? For some smart remodelers the traditional good months/bad months cycle is over.
